Detailed Biography
James Aboagye is a Ghanaian writer, producer, director, production coordinator, costume designer, and film industry leader with nearly three decades of experience in Ghana’s film and television industry. He began his professional career in 1997 and is the Founder and Creative Lead of 3 Units Media Image.
He has worked across various areas of filmmaking, including screenwriting, directing, production management, logistics, scheduling, and budgeting, with credits including The Mistake, Kumasi Yonko, Nyame Nipa, Sika Dam, Bohye Ba, Afunumu Ba, and the TV3 series Angels.
Beyond filmmaking, Aboagye has played significant roles in the development of Ghana’s film industry. He has served as President and Secretary of the Film Producers Association of Ghana (FIPAG) and was an originator and former Secretary of the Akan Film Producers Association. He has also contributed to several industry and policy committees, including those of the National Film Authority and Creative Arts Agency.
He is also an advocate for the modernisation and digital transformation of Ghana’s film industry, particularly in areas such as digital distribution, entrepreneurship, financing, marketing, intellectual property, and local-content development. His 2026 MyJoyOnline article, “Ghana’s film industry: The Nokia of African cinema?”, examines the challenges facing Ghanaian cinema and the need for structural and technological adaptation.
Aboagye has further served as a jury member at film festivals and awards, including the Golden Movies Awards Africa and the MACA International Festival and Awards in Nigeria, and has collaborated with the Regal Film Festival and Awards.
